A tranquil bedroom is the foundation to a relaxing home. This is where you go to recharge in order to have the energy that you need to manage your day, your family and your business. Without proper rest, we feel tired, ungrounded and overwhelmed with all that is on our to do list. A well-thought out plan for your bedroom will contribute to a positive mindset and give you what you need to accomplish what you desire. Here are three areas that will help you achieve the perfect restful retreat.

BEDDING

A comfortable mattress is the most important part of a tranquil bedroom. If your mattress does not feel as cozy as you would like and you are not ready to purchase a new one, you can buy a mattress topper (not to be confused wth a mattress pad which protects the mattress).

A mattress topper (used on top of the mattress pad) adds at least 2 inches of cushion to make your bed feel more comfortable.

Here is an example of a mattress topper from bedbathandbeyond adding more cushion to your mattress.

Choose bedding colors and patterns that make you feel good. Use your intuition, you know what feels right. Don’t go by what you see in magazines or on TV. We don’t want “trends”, we want what makes us happy.  Typical calming colors, in soft to medium shades, include blue, green, gray and tan. You can incorporate small amounts of your favorite bright colors. When choosing sheets, the higher the thread count the better for a softer feel; thread counts typically range from 200-1500.

Comforters add the primary theme to your bedroom. While there are numerous comforters out there in various colors and patterns.

I find it most useful to purchase a plain white comforter and then purchase one or more duvet covers. A duvet cover is like a “pillow cover” for your comforter.

Duvet covers save on space since it’s like folding a sheet vs. folding a thick comforter. Most of us don’t have storage for multiple large comforters, so using duvet covers makes it easy to give your bed a different look with minimal effort, when you can just change the look with a different cover when ready.

Aside from your bed pillows that you sleep on, it’s always nice to have additional pillows to add more layers to the bed. Usually you can buy pillow shams (used more for decoration) that match your regular pillowcases to keep with the same look. Also, a nice addition are European pillows; these are large square pillows measuring 26”. Pillowcases are readily available in many colors for this style of pillow.

LIGHTING

Lighting makes all the difference in a bedroom since relaxation is key for calming the mind.

Use table or floor lamps next to your bed or from across the room to create soft lighting. Over head lighting can be too strong unless you have a dimmer. During the day, you can control the amount of light into your bedroom with your shades/blinds and curtains.

Choose lamp bases in subtle colors (such as brushed silver and gold) and streamlined shapes that don’t compete with your other decor for a subtle look.

DECOR

Art and other decor in your bedroom should reflect a calm feeling as this is your place of relaxation more than any other room. Art can be wall art (framed pictures and/or wall sculptures), plants and tabletop or floor water fountains for a peaceful sound. Your decor should represent your personal style.

Search for tranquil inspiration at Great Big Canvas . I like Great Big Canvas because you can select each image in a variety of sizes, making it possible for you to get just the right size for your needs. I personally like purchasing the images in the “stretched canvas” format since it gives a “clean” look and will go with any decor. However, you may like the frames that are available.

Below are a few examples of tranquil images from Great Big Canvas. You can search their vast inventory for what attracts you…

Once you create your tranquil bedroom, you will have a place to look forward to that will help rejuvenate your soul.

This may inspire you to see how you can bring this feeling to other parts of your home. In the meantime, be proud that you have created your own sanctuary where nothing else matters except to be in the moment and to know that your self-care is what makes it possible for you to manage and live your life in a way that brings you joy.
